Lizzy’s Law has PASSED!!
Effective January 1, 2026
Purpose:
Lizzy’s Law establishes statewide safety standards for inflatable amusement devices—such as bounce houses, slides, and obstacle courses—to protect children and families from tragic accidents caused by improper setup or unsafe weather conditions.
Key Requirements Under AB198
(Please reference the actual law for your responsibility - this is a synposis of the law and does not include all of the details)
Manufacturer Labels:
Every inflatable device must have all manufacturer labels intact and legible. Devices missing labels cannot be used and must be destroyed.Manual Transfer:
When sold or transferred, the operator must provide the manufacturer’s user manual and ensure labels remain attached.Inspection & Logbook:
Operators must inspect each device before use and maintain a logbook recording inspections, wind-speed readings, and safety checks.Wind Monitoring:
Wind must be measured with an anemometer (wind meter) before and during use.
➤ Maximum allowable wind speed: the greater of
(a) the manufacturer’s recommendation, or
(b) 15 miles per hour.
Operation must cease and the device must be deflated if wind exceeds this limit.Anchoring Requirements:
Devices must be anchored at every point with:
• Stakes at least 18 inches long, driven at a 22° angle toward the center, or
• Weights of at least 75 pounds per anchor point, whichever is specified by the manufacturer.Operator’s Warning Sign:
Operators must post a conspicuous sign at the front of each device displaying the required safety information (including wind-speed limit, anchoring standards, and logbook availability).Accountability:
Violating these safety rules creates a conclusive presumption of reckless conduct in civil actions.
